Week in Training (July 21st to 27th)

Flame Tree Flowers

A little while back I took this photo on one of my runs of some June winter buds ready to blossom. Well, they’ve finally bloomed into these spectacular red flowers, adding a show of colour to my usual running trails.

I had to Google a little to find out what these flowers are. They’re colloquailly and aptly called flame trees, though the name can also be applied to several other trees with red blooms around the world, including another type of tree known as the Illawarra Flame Tree in Western Australia. They’re more officially known as coral trees under the genus Erythrina. I’m still not quite sure exactly which species of coral trees they are as there are several, but the ones they seem to resemble most closely are the Indian coral trees.

So last week I said I would focus on swimming for my cardio. However, due to some unforeseen circumstances, I wasn’t able to hit the pool this week for any practices (boo) and ended up running instead. I really miss running and was glad to be hitting the trails again! It’s been raining but it hasn’t been too cold so I’ve been able to dash out for a couple of quick runs in between the showers.

One thing that doesn’t make me mind the rain nor the weather reports that forecast rain for most of next week? The fact that my Pipduck gumboots in antique floral print have arrived.

Hunter Rose Print Gum Boots

How beautiful are they? I love the gorgeous floral pattern and the fact that the colours of the boots make me think of strawberries and cream. Yum!

I’ve always loved the idea of Wellington boots since I first read about them in my childhood Enid Blyton boots and I’ve always thought a stylish pair of rain boots would be great for winter, especially for protecting my feet on my way in and out of work while I keep my heels tucked safely away in my bag! A friend of mine pointed out a pair of rad fire engine red Hunter gumboots while we were out shopping but we were both a little put off by the prices which ranged anywhere from over $100 to $300. Apparently Hunter is the boot of choice for Kate Moss and every other cool celeb worth her rock star chic creds at Glastonbury, festival of music and mud, so I guess that might explain the price!

Anyway, I thought I might be better off just picking up a cute cheap pair from Target or Kmart when a couple of weeks later, that same friend alerted me in a text to the fact that gumboots are now up on the Ozsale website! I had a quick peek online and found these gorgeous pair of Tamara Henriques antique floral print boots by Pipduck, an Australian brand. They were so cute and only going for $50 (I had a quick check and found the original price was $200) so I snapped them up right away. Can you say bargain???

I’ve now entered Week 7 of Kayla Itsines’ BBG workout, which means a repeat of the Week 5 workouts. Commandos are still my most-hated exercise – I don’t think I’ll ever be able to complete a full 24 Commando reps in a row, but, hey, never say never! I’m sen considering incorporating Commandos into my workout every day, starting with three on each arm and adding an extra rep each day, just because I’m so determined not to let this beat me!

My favourite as usual is the legs and cardio workout – what can I say, I’m just a cardio fan! Love the burn of the sumo jump squats and weighted wide squats on a bench (or, in my case, two stable chairs!). A big plus I’ve noticed over the past few weeks is that my legs have been looking really long and lean, which I notice I only get if I incorporate both running and plyometric exercises in my workouts.

Two things I’ve really enjoyed about the Kayla Itsines BBG workouts are how quick they are and how I can do them at home, either outside in the backyard or in the living room if it is cold and raining outside. It just makes it so much easier to squeeze in a workout in a short space of time or, say, right ahead of a spontaneous decision to get together with friends on a short notice or if it’s raining and you don’t feel like making the long drive to the gym. All you have to do is throw on some gym clothes, unroll your yoga mat (it makes it easier to avoid soggy grass/carpet burns/sweat dripping on the floor), set your timer and bang! Away you go! Then a quick shower, a change of clothes and next thing you know, you’re at brunch or dinner with friends, enjoying your bread and dessert guilt-free 🙂
