Sitting is the New Smoking – Strategies to Keep Active Throughout the Day

I’m sure you’ve all heard or seen or read it somewhere now… apparently, sitting is the new smoking. But, hey, since when is this any surprise? Health experts have been warning us for some years now on the dangers of parking our butt in one place for too long and as of late there’s been some serious movement (ooh, unintended pun right there) towards taking the stairs, sporting swanky pedometers (otherwise known as fitness bands), and installing the standing or treadmill desk at our office or home study. Really, it’s no surprise that in our society of modern conveniences, sedentary desk jobs and TV nights every night, we’re simply not as sturdy or as fit as our ancestors who were either hunting and gathering, running from the dinosaurs, chopping wood out of which to build their own homes, fetching water for everyday use, walking miles just to visit their neighbours and friends or spending hours scrubbing floors, fetching firewood and doing other chores.

With all these warnings and cries of ‘danger, danger’, what can we do about it? Well, according to the experts once again, just one hour of gym a day is not going to cut it. There’s no escape from this sedentary business, not even for us runners! Instead, we’ve got to stay active all day every day. (I know, what the hell, right?!?)

So how do we do achieve activeness every day? Many people are recommending investing in a standing desk, but these contraptions can be pretty expensive, not to mention your employer might not be too keen about going to the expense of installing a pricey piece of furniture that might well turn out to be nothing more than a fad to be consigned to the scrapheap in a few months’ time.

Well, with this in mind, I was thinking up ways to keep active and walking throughout the day, and just for fun, I thought I’d share some of my strategies in a post!

Strategies to stay active throughout the day:

  • Schedule mini hourly breaks throughout the day to get up and walk around, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
  • In fact, get up and walk around during commercial breaks while watching your favourite shows on TV.
  • Take a quick fast walk around the block during lunch break.
  • Invest in a Fitbit or some other kind of pedometer/fitness band that keeps count of your steps, forcing you to take at least a minimum of 10,000 steps a day.
  • Walk or take the public transport whenever possible.
  • Okay, if you’ve got to take the car, try to park it at some distance from the gym/shops/work so you can get in a bit of walking in between.
  • If you’re taking a phone call, keep standing and walking throughout the entirety of the call.
  • Schedule power walk catch-ups with friends, rather than coffee catch-ups.
  • The oldie but goodie – screw the lift, take the stairs!
