I just wanted to share this great new app I discovered this week – the Pacer Smart Workout Timer by Bright Mediums. I’ve been meaning to look for a good interval app for a while and when I read about this one on the Healthy Traveler’s Instagram page, I went straight onto the Apps store and downloaded it.
What do I love about the Pacer Smart Workout app? Well, the aesthetics for one thing. I love that soothing blue colour of the app and the muted audio cues it emits – nothing too alarm clock-ish or annoying yet it’s still loud enough to be noticed. I also like the fact that I can set as many intervals as I want to and schedule rest breaks in between too. It even allows you to schedule in warm ups and cool downs and keeps a history of your workouts. It’s the perfect app for interval workouts! And did I mention that it’s completely free?
So far I’ve been using the app for my Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide workouts which allows me to schedule four intervals of 7 minutes each with a minute’s rest in between (which is great because I probably end up resting way too much in between workouts). I also can’t wait to start using the app for running fartlek training in my running.
I also thought I’d share some of my favourite interval workouts below that I can’t wait to start using with my new timer app!
Fit in Heels: I love this girl! She’s so funny and droll, she always cracks me up. And I love the names she gives her workouts – like Officer, I’m Guilty… for Killing That Workout and the Give Me Chocolate or Give Me Death Workout! They’re all HIIT (high intensity interval training) workouts which don’t take long and can be done at home – the best workouts!
Peanut Butter Fingers: I have to admit to a slight obsession with Julie of Peanut Butter Fingers and her blog. Her posts are always so entertaining and funny and upbeat. And she has a huge list of workouts on her page, including treadmill and elliptical workouts, leg workouts and upper arm workouts. A lot of these workouts are repetition-based so you don’t really need the Pacer app for those, but there are a few which incorporates a time interval!
Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide: If you haven’t checked out her Instagram page yet, do it right now and be blown away by her amazing abs of steel and her long, lean physique! Such a fan. Such a fan. I started doing her 12 Week Bikini Body Guide this year and it’s one of the toughest and best things I’ve done! As I’ve said before, don’t let the words ‘Bikini Body Guide’ put you off. I’ve heard that even guys who try the workout are a complete mess by the end of it! I’m still in the middle of Week 10 so keep checking back in the Body section for my week-by-week review of her guide. It’s a hardcore, super amazing, body sculpting interval training program!
Running Intervals: Or fartleks, which I always thought was such an ugly name! Basically, it means intervals of short, fast, intense speeds alternating with recovery intervals of walking or easy jogging. For example, running as fast as you can for two minutes followed by another two minutes of easy jogging or walking to catch your breath, then two more minutes of super fast running, followed by yet another two minutes of easy jogging/walking. It’s a great way to build up speed and endurance and I definitely need to incorporate more of these in my running program! Check out Runner’s World for some great articles and tips on running intervals.
