NaNoWriMo

Yup, it’s that time of the year again – it’s National Novel Writing Month otherwise known as plonk your butt down in front of the laptop and get that 50,000 word-novel out month!

It’s almost a week into November bu there’s still time to join NaNoWriMo and catch up on your writing! What I love about the concept is that it forces writers to stop procrastinating and worrying about writing the perfect sentence and just start getting sentences out there instead. Sure, it could be a super crappy 50,000-word novel by the end of the month but at least you’ve got something there. The bare bones of a novel. And from there, you can start editing, editing, editing. Rewriting. Filling in plot holes. Adding some stuff in. Taking some other stuff away.

This year, I’m not doing NanoWriMo as I’ve already got most of my next WiP (work in progress!) out of my head and onto the paper (or do I mean Word document?) but instead I’m aiming to force myself to sit down and just write for at least an hour a day and fill in the gaps of my WiP. Just an hour. Every day. Doesn’t matter if what I write is shit. At least it’s written down. I’ve been procrastinating with my WiP and fluttering around going, ‘Oh, I don’t think this is good enough. I need to do more research. I need to think harder about why these characters are doing what they’re doing and what they should be doing instead.’ But, no. No more fluttering. No more research. No more procrastinating. It’s on with the writing! The rest can come later.

Are you joining NaNoWriMo this year? It’s not too late if you haven’t! Head over to the NanoWriMo website, sign up and then sit down and get cracking!

[P.S. if you like the pictures I’ve used in this post, they’re all posters you can purchase from the NaNoWriMo website. Go here and buy a copy to inspire you or mousey through the other merchandise they’ve got! Just don’t let that be an excuse to procrastinate from writing those 50,000 words! ; )]
