Make Me Some Muesli!


For the past couple of years, I have not been a fan of cold breakfasts. In fact, the only kind of breakfast I like is a hot protein breakfast – usually involving eggs in some way. My favorite is a meal of scrambled eggs, chicken, mushrooms, tomatoes and broccoli – yum!

However, a hot breakfast always takes time in preparation. I also began to hear more and more oats – it seems everyone’s into oats in a big way. I was doubtful – I am NOT a fan of porridge or oatmeal. However, I thought I’d give it a try so I bought a bag of oats and tried making some homemade oatmeal.

It was a big fail. I really did not enjoy it, even sweetened with blueberries and strawberries. Maybe I just didn’t make it right – or I need to readjust it to suit my tastes better. I might try it again in the future but for now, the bag of steel-cut oats I bought had been simply languishing in my shelf, gathering dust.

Recently, though, I thought I’d give it another try – this time with making my own muesli! I had the oats – and a bag of LSA (linseed, sunflower seeds and almonds finely grounded into a mix) that I bought to try and add texture and ‘hold’ to some veggie pulp burger patties I once tried to make (another fail. the pulp refused to hold together!)

The muesli, however, was not a fail!

I started with a base of the steel-cut oats, mixed through with several handfuls of bran, a couple of spoonfuls of the LSA, a few more handfuls of yummy sunflower seeds and another couple of handfuls of raisins. (All ingredients can be found in your supermarket’s health food aisle – except raisins which are often in the baking section) Spoon the mixture into a bowl and top with  milk. Easy and yummy – and it makes for lots of muesli at less the price than your usual pre-packaged muesli. Bonus – because you made it yourself, you know exactly what went in so it’s much healthier than pre-packaged muesli and will last ages!
