Week 17 Marathon Training

Today was the day I started swimming classes again after a couple of weeks off due to some re-enrollment problems. I was kind of nervous because I hadn’t been swimming for a while, not even for practice, but I was glad to find I hadn’t forgotten a lot of things. I still have trouble putting everything together – kicks, arms, breathing – for the freestyle, but I think I’m going to just do a lot of drills and practice and cross my fingers that everything will come together eventually. Right now, it feels like I’m never going to get it, but I’m gonna just keep persevering and see how things go! That’s the only thing you can do, right?

In other news, I’ve reached another milestone in my half-marathon training and have reached the 14km mark in my long run! I forced myself to take it slow and easy in my run, instead of trying to rush and get it over with, and that really helped! I did suffer a little discomfort in my left knee which is a recurring problem so I’m going to do lots of stretching and warm-ups and see how that goes next week, otherwise I might have to see the physiotherapist about it. I don’t want to injure myself at this point in time!

Finally, Body Pump! I’ve always had trouble with the chest presses. I always felt like I’m doing it wrong – using my shoulders and upper arms, more than my chest, while doing this particular activity. So after class I asked my BP instructor to spot me. She said it looked like I was doing everything right, then suggested I imagined I was bending the bar as I lowered it to my chest. That worked a treat! It felt much better after that.

So the moral of the story is, if you’re not sure of something you’re doing in your Les Mills classes, ask your instructor! They’re always there to help and are more than willing to assist in fixing something that’s not quite right 🙂

This is what this week’s workout looked like:

April 28th to May 4th:
Monday: 8km run
Tuesday: Rest Day
Wednesday: 5km run
Thursday: 14km run
Friday: Rest Day
Saturday: 20 minute run/walk on the treadmill, plus Body Pump class
Sunday: 45 minute swim

And finally, for your Sunday viewing pleasure, a friend of mine sent me a photo tagged with the following message: “You shouldn’t have taken those swimming classes.”

I didn’t get what she meant at first until I opened the photo and saw it, and began to laugh.
